Andronix - Linux on Android 8.0-release

The Andronix platform provides the capability to install a Linux system on an Android device without requiring root access.

How does this operate?
Andronix leverages PRoot to run various Linux distributions directly on Android devices. The application uses Termux as the terminal interface for the Andronix operating system environment.

What functionalities are available with Andronix?
The scope of use is quite broad. While Linux containers are inherently limited by the absence of full Linux kernel support, Android's SELinux policies, CPU architecture, and hardware specifications influence performance. Some users have even replaced their laptops and desktops with Andronix solutions. For tasks such as web browsing, coding, or other moderate computing activities that do not heavily tax the device's hardware, Andronix offers a practical alternative.

Additionally, users can maintain multiple operating systems simultaneously without the need for multi-boot configurations. This flexibility allows installing and removing up to twelve OS instances—contingent on available storage space—without interference.

How can access be achieved?
The Linux containers provided by Andronix are accessible via several interfaces: a CLI (Command Line Interface), similar to an SSH connection; a GUI featuring desktop environments such as LXQt, Xfce, and LXDE; or through window managers like Awesome, i3, and Openbox.

Is the platform free?
Yes. Andronix is entirely ad-free, and all unmodded distributions along with their associated resources are free to use without restrictions. Modded operating systems are paid, but they are offered at a low cost as a lifetime purchase, with unlimited installations across multiple devices. Supporters may opt for Andronix Premium, which offers additional perks such as online synchronization using Andronix Commands and a web app accessible from any device.

Is Andronix open-source?
The project maintains a partially open-source model. All free distribution tarballs and shell scripts are publicly available on GitHub. However, proprietary components such as the Android application itself and files related to Modded OS versions remain closed-source for security reasons.

The developers have expressed enthusiasm for open-source initiatives. Developers or maintainers of open-source projects are welcome to contact them for complementary access following verification procedures.

Currently, Andronix supports eight unmodded Linux distributions and four modded versions:

Please note:

• An F-Droid version of Termux is required.
• Your Android device should be running at least Android 7.0.
